How and How Often to Clean Curtains and Drapes

Diligently cleaning one’s home is a great way to keep it looking great. You vacuum the carpet and rugs, sweep and mop the floor, clean your kitchen counter tops, and even get out the heavy duty scrubber to get your toilets and showers. But there is one obvious place homeowners often overlook when doing a deep clean of their home: their curtains and drapes.

Think about it, when was the last time your curtains got a real thorough cleaning? For many, the answer is never! It is quite easy to forget about them. They look lovely and they keep the bright sunshine out of your rooms, but unless you get your nose right up to the fabric it can be easy to overlook their dirtiness, especially if they are a darker color.

The truth is your curtains are absolute dander magnets! As dirt, dust, and hair from your pets gets kicked around they cling to fibers on your curtains for dear life. Every time you open and close them they get kicked contributing to the amount of dirt in your home. Not only that, but the lingering junk in the air can make the air less breathable for those with certain health conditions.

If you want to keep your home and air nice and clean, it is important that you clean your curtains and drapes regularly. However, the size, weight, and materials of these household decorations can make approaching cleaning a bit awkward. But it really isn’t all that complicated! Here is what you need to know about curtain cleaning.

How often should my drapes be cleaned?

Quite a fair bit of dirt, dander, dust, and hair can build up in your home, and faster than you might expect. It isn’t all that pleasant to think about, but that is why it is best to keep them as clean as possible.

To keep your drapes and curtains clean, get a deep cleaning done by a professional cleaner every three to six months. But, that is just for a deep cleaning. You can actually do regular cleaning every time you do other cleaning. Taking your vacuum cleaner to your drapes can help control the amount of crud that builds up. Just make sure you do so carefully and use the extension… not just holding your vacuum cleaner up to your window!

What is the best way to clean drapes?

Curtains and drapes come in all shapes, sizes, and materials. Depending on the material some curtains aren’t necessarily “dry clean only.” However, if you really want to make sure your curtains are properly cleaned and cared for it is absolutely worth it to get them professionally cleaned.

Your typical home washing machine simply isn’t cut out for the job. The tossing and turning can cause any breads or decorative elements to be damaged or come loose. Depending on the material, curtains and drapes may also be prone to shrinkage.

The biggest issues with just tossing your drapes into a washing machine is the real possibility of completely ruining them because of sun exposure. Even if your drapes are made from heavy duty materials, the longer they sit soaking in those heavy rays of sunlight and heat, the more fragile the fibers become. Simply tossing them in the wash and saying “good luck” may damage your drapes beyond repair.

When it comes time for deep cleaning curtains and drapes if you want to make sure they get the best care and cleaning, don’t worry about washing them yourself, leave it to the professionals. Although, giving it a good shake out first is always appreciated!
